Taking Sleep Deprivation to The New Heights

Hi friends!!

This weekend was such an incredible experience. Lindsay and I originally decided to take a trip to Switzerland because the flight was pretty cheap and we are suckers for pretty scenery. This trip ended up being one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. At 2:00 AM on Friday (Halloween... which they don't really celebrate here) morning we boarded the shuttle to the airport without any sleep under our belts. When we got off the plane in Zürich around  10:30 AM, we were both half way delirious, so imagine our confusion when a majority of the signs in the airport were in German. Once we realized this, we couldn't stop laughing because we didn't even think to look at what the popular language was in the area because our friend had told us that a majority of Switzerland just spoke English because they have four national languages. We finally got to the hotel shuttle after about 45 minutes of aimless wandering through the airport, trying to decipher all of the signs. After we unpacked and recuperated, we hit the streets of Zürich. Well, let me rephrase that... We got about 400 meters away from the hotel and realized we really had no idea where we needed to be going so we went back and got instructions. Soon we found ourselves crammed onto a cablecar trotting through the city that took us to the city center for some food, shopping, and sight seeing.

We got to the airport in London at like 4:30 am... It was decorated for Christmas already!! This picture pretty much sums up our morning of traveling...

We took this little train type thing up a really tall hill and were rewarded with this view of Zürich!! Absolutely gorgeous!!
Can you tell Lindsay was just a little hungry and tired when this was taken?

After we got food in our systems...

We ate delicious Swiss Cheese fondue for dinner the first night because we couldn't function any longer due to sleep deprivation. We turned in VERY early that night!!

We woke up around 8:00 the next morning to take the train over to Lucerne. It is a very cute little town and looks exactly like what you would picture a Swiss town to look like. We had a lot of fun just walking around and looking at everything. We stumbled upon this really cool looking clock tower that you can climb so we decided to make the trek up to it which was really fun and would have had an amazing view if it wasn't for the fog... Oh my goodness. The fog here was the thickest I've ever seen. It was madness!!

They had these little bread men in all of the grocery stores so we decided to try them. They tasted a bit like Kolache bread... but sweeter!

After we ate a lunch of sandwiches and crisps, Lindsay and I decided we really wanted to see the Alps and we weren't going to be able to do that with the ridiculous amount of fog settled over Lucerne. We decided to try to walk around Lake Lucerne and seek higher ground to hopefully get above the fog. After getting lost in the woods multiple times (and singing T-Swift's new song included below...), we finally got to a spot where we could see one HUGE mountain. We decided that would have to be good enough for the day because the fog was getting denser, it was getting darker outside, and we were getting very hungry!!

Day three was spend at this crazy little mountain park Lindsay found in a brochure. We took spent the day hiking and I'm not even going to bother trying to put into words how spectacular the views were. When we reached the top of the mountain we ate lunch at this little restaurant. Slight problem though, nobody spoke a lick of English and we, obviously, spoke no German. Long story short we ended up ordering french fries for lunch because it was the only thing on the menu we recognized. And to answer your question... Those are the Swiss Alps in distance in all of the pictures!!

Heading up the ski lift for our adventure!!

View from the top of the mountain!!

This week we hit the halfway point with the semester which is absolutely mind blowing!! Where has the time gone?!?! This is going to seem super cheesy, but while we were hiking in the mountains this weekend I had a lot of time to reflect on everything I had experienced. Last year while reading John Green's novel Looking for Alaska, I was drawn to this quote that just so happened to be Francois Rabelais's (a poet) final words. "I go to seek a great perhaps..." Over the years, philosophers have tried to decipher what he meant by this. While I am by no means a philosopher, I simply could not stop thinking about this quote. I decided that by participating in this program, I unknowingly began seeking for my own great perhaps. While nobody is 100% sure what this concept means exactly, I personally think it represents that magical moment in your life when you are finally able to come to terms with any mistakes you may have made in your past and finally just see your life for what it is, a beautiful and chaotic mess stitched together with happiness, love, and good intentions.

Until Paris/Bruges my friends!! Can't wait to see you in a few days Mom and Dad!!

xoxo
